Assiut governorate is considered one of the largest governorates of Upper Egypt, and the most important of them in location, as it mediates the governorates of Upper Egypt, and its capital is the city of Assiut, whose name was derived from the Pharaonic word "Siut" meaning the guard. The governorate is characterized by a distinct continental climate, due to its location between two mountain heights. It was considered the commercial capital of Upper Egypt, and was famous for its ancient neighborhoods and shrines. Today, the governorate is considered one of the oldest governorates in Egypt, and it gained its importance in ancient Egypt because of its central location among the regions of Pharaonic Egypt, and for being a major center for commercial caravans heading to the oases in the Western Desert and the beginning of the Arbaeen Trail that reaches Sudan. Assiut includes a cultural heritage from different eras, whether the Pharaonic, Roman, Coptic and Islamic eras, and is considered one of the tourist attractions due to the availability of tourism ingredients in it.
