In 1845 major restoration work began on the building under the direction of Eugène Voilet-le-Duc and lasted twenty-five years. Starting in 1963, the facade of the cathedral was cleaned of the soot and dirt that had accumulated on it for several centuries, and its original color was restored. Another cleaning and restoration campaign took place from 1991 to 2000.
