Ao Talo Wao

From 1937 to 1948, Ko Tarutao was seen as a “hell in the deep sea,” according to the information board at the entrance to the Ao Talu Wau Historic Trail. Of the approximately 3,000 prisoners held in the former Talu Wau prison, hundreds died. Due to disease and famine, many became fearsome pirates, and the signs, crumbling buildings, and wood carvings along the path today offer a glimpse into this intriguing chapter of Thai history.
