Beckford's Tower and Museum
Henry Goodridge built the elegant neoclassical tower atop Lansdowne Hill in 1827 as a retreat for the brilliant writer William Pickford. Born into great wealth and endowed with precocious talent, Pickford created impressive premises to store his exceptional collections of art, furniture and books, and today the tower houses a museum dedicated to Pickford. The museum's beautiful spiral staircase leads up to the Belvedere Building, with its stunning ornate lantern offering stunning views of Bath and the surrounding countryside. At the foot of the tower is the Victorian cemetery, which was once part of Pickford Pleasure Park, where he is buried.
