Bergama is a historic town located in western Turkey, 50 miles north of the city of Izmir, and it is an archaeological treasure that includes many ruins that still exist to this day. The modern city is located above the remains of a Roman city, while the remains of the ancient Greek city are located northeast of the Bergama River, on a high hill with stepped slopes, and the Greek ruins are also located in the western suburbs. The city's archaeological museum contains a large collection of artifacts from the region, ranging in age from the Paleolithic to the Byzantine era. The city has cotton and leather industries, and in the surrounding area there are cotton, tobacco and vineyards.
