Description of the place
Located on the northern side of the Agua de Pau mountain range on the outskirts of Lake Fogo Nature Reserve, the Velha caldera occupies a large expanse of rugged terrain deeply embedded in a valley surrounded by massive cliffs, and presents a range of distinctive volcanic features such as a stork field and a geothermal water pool. It is heated by the internal heat of the Agua de Pau volcano.
