Cathedral Basilica of Eger
The Basilica of Eger is also called the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. John, and it is the main cathedral of the Diocese of Eger, which means that the bishops carry out their daily tasks in it. It is the second largest temple in Hungary. János László Pyrker was appointed Archbishop of Eger in In 1827, he asked the chief architect of the time, József Hild, to design this magnificent building. Construction lasted from 1831 to 1836 and the building was consecrated in 1837. Huge statues were made next to the staircase of the basilica of St. Stephen and St. Lazo the Hungarians stand in the first row, behind them are Saints Peter and Paul, and it took longer to build the altars and paint the ceiling frescoes than to build the cathedral itself.
