Cathedrale Notre Dame
Built in 1160 and mostly completed by 1260, the cathedral is believed to have undergone many modifications over the following centuries. In the 1790s, Notre Dame witnessed desecration during the French Revolution, and most of its religious paintings were damaged or destroyed. Soon after the publication of Victor Hugo's novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1831, public interest in the building was renewed. In 1845 major restoration work began on the building under the direction of Eugène Voilet-le-Duc and lasted twenty-five years. Starting in 1963, the facade of the cathedral was cleaned of the soot and dirt that had accumulated on it for several centuries, and its original color was restored. Another cleaning and restoration campaign took place from 1991 to 2000.
