The reason for its name dates back to the fifth century BC, as described by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, as he tells in his book that Queen Cleopatra swam in it herself during her visit to Siwa Oasis, and a number of historians mentioned that it was the eye that Alexander the Great visited on his trip to the Temple of Amun in Siwa Oasis, and it is said In one of the narrations also, it is the eye that was mentioned in the Holy Qur’an at the end of the verses of Surat Al-Kahf under the name of a muddy spring.
