The size of the Dohany Street Synagogue, which opened in 1659, reflects the importance of the Jewish population in the capital at that time. Built in four years, based on Moorish-style plans by German architect Ludwig Förster, the synagogue is the largest synagogue in Europe and the second largest in the world.
