The Sirmione peninsula was a focal point for the control of Lake Garda over the centuries, as the Romans had already made it an important place at the base of the peninsula on the Gallic route between Brescia and Verona, as it was a place with outposts, residences for officers and emperors, and food stores for the armies. Therefore, these fortifications were built to protect the city from any external danger, and they include many castles, towers, and walls built around the city. These fortifications are now called "Grote de Catullo" and give the city a distinctive and unique archaeological character.
