Galata Mevlevi House Museum
The Mevlevi Khan Galata or Mevlevi Tekke was built in 1491 and was the first Mevlevi house in Istanbul. The caravanserai ceased functioning as a dervish lodge in 1925, and was opened as a museum in 1975. The building underwent a major renovation between 2005 and 2009, and now serves as a museum for the Mevlevi Sufi sect of Islam. The Khan Galata Mevlevi Museum is a landmark of great importance in Istanbul, as it provides an insight into Turkey that you will not find anywhere else, by providing information about the Mevlevi culture, their music, and their traditions, and therefore it is worth including in any city tour.
