This monument honors King Mengrai who founded the city of Chiang Rai in 1262. He was the 25th king of the Lao Dynasty and the first king of the Mengrai dynasty. He brought together several small states to form a large nation known today as "Lana", with Chiang Mai as its capital. The bronze statue of King Mengrai is highly appreciated by locals and tourists interested in the city's history.
