Madeira Island is famous for the Laurisilva Forest, which constitutes a natural heritage of utmost scientific importance, and was recognized by UNESCO in 1999 as a global natural heritage under the name "Madeira Natural Park", with an area of about 22,000 hectares, and includes the largest variety of flora and fauna, with some Rare species such as the mountain orchid, Madeira laurel, bay tree and Madeira mahogany, as well as shrubs, ferns, mosses, lichens and other small plants typical of the Laurisilva Forest.
