Located in the Kalamaga district of Tallinn, the Patari Prison Gallery covers approximately four hectares of a former sea fortress located on the shore of Tallinn Bay. The Republic of Estonia, which declared its independence in 1918, rebuilt it as a prison after World War I and served it until 2003. For Estonians, Batare is one of the most prominent symbols of Soviet and Nazi political terror, and it is now a museum and exhibition documenting and illustrating the history of the prison for visitors.
