The Piri Reis Museum gains its importance from the presence in its collection of one of the oldest maps depicting the modern world as we know it today. The map of Piri Reis, which bears the name of the Ottoman geographer and traveler who drew it, dates back to the sixteenth century AD, when this geographer was known for his accurate maps that monitor the world's continents and countries with very high accuracy compared to the capabilities available in his time.
