Saint Ferdinand Castle is an analogue of Santa Barbara Castle in the city of Alicante. It was built in the neoclassical style on Tussal Hill at the beginning of the nineteenth century as a defensive fortress against the French advance. It was named in honor of Ferdinand VII of Spain, and it played an important role in protecting the city of Alicante. from any attack coming from the north, as it is believed that it was also meant to serve as a prison. Currently, Castle San Fernando can be visited freely, although there is not much to see besides the outer walls.
