The Polar Museum, Scott Polar Research Institute
The Scott Polar Research Institute and Museum (SPRI) is a worldwide research center for polar regions and glaciology. It is a sub-department of the University of Cambridge's Department of Geography, and is located on Linsfield Street in South Cambridge. Frank Debenham founded the institute in 1920 as a national memorial to Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his companions, who died on their return trip from the Antarctic in 1912. It researches issues relevant to the Arctic and Antarctic in the environmental sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The Institute is home to the Polar Museum and has a staff of approximately 60, consisting of academic staff, library and support staff as well as graduate students, fellows, and fellows enrolled in research programs. The institute also hosts the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research.
