Upper Town
Bregenz's old upper town (Oberstadt) occupies the site of what was once the historic Roman walled city of Brigantium. It's a wonderful area to explore on foot, as many of the streets have preserved their old-world feel and charm, and in places remnants of the old 13th-century city walls still stand. Highlights of the Upper Town include the Old Town Hall (Alte Rathaus), a half-timbered building from 1622; Deuringschlösschen, a small palace built in 1698; Walled Capuchin Abbey and Church since 1636 with St. Joseph's Chapel (added in the 18th century); and the impressive St. Gallus parish church, a simple 14th-century Gothic structure rebuilt in 1738 with its Baroque interior.
