The Zaranik Reserve is located along the Mediterranean coast in North Sinai at the eastern end of Lake Bardawil. It was declared a protected area around 1985. It is one of the largest reserves in Egypt. It is characterized by its salt water that covers about seventy percent of its area and the rest is covered with sand dunes. .
