Akkar is one of the seven governorates of Lebanon, and its capital is the city of Halba. Akkar extends from the course of Nahr al-Bared to the course of the Great River, along the border with Syria in the north, with an area of more than 776 square kilometres. It is about 110 km away from the Lebanese capital, Beirut. The Akkar region, in its entirety, has a rich heritage of civilizations and peoples that have crossed or settled there for more than 6,000 years, immortalizing their presence with dozens of archaeological and heritage sites, of which an essential part is still visible, such as forts, castles, paintings, inscriptions carved on rocks, ancient temples, churches, mosques, and hospices. And palaces, houses, presses, mills and household tools, to many caravanserais, roads, arched stone bridges, caves, grottoes and burials, each of which has stories and stories in the history of this region. From the ancient stone ages to modern times and the successive eras between them, each of them had a site and an impact in the governorate of Akkar. Akkar is characterized by a rich and varied nature, as it consists of 3 main geographic regions, which are the plains, plateaus of medium height, and mountains.
