Information about Oberhausen (Germany)

Oberhausen is a city on the Emscher River in the Ruhr district of Germany, located between the cities of Essen and Duisburg (about 13 km. or 8.1 miles). The city hosts the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival and the Oberhausen Gasometer is an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Oberhausen is named after the railway station in 1847 which takes its name from Oberhausen Castle (German: Schloss Oberhausen). The new town was formed in 1862 following an influx of people into the local coal mines and steel mills. Oberhausen obtained city rights in 1874, absorbing several neighboring neighborhoods including Alstaden and parts of Styrum and Dumpten in 1910. Oberhausen became a city in 190, and the cities of Sterkrade and Osterfeld were merged in 1929. It combines historical buildings on the one hand, and modern architecture on the other.
