Cathedral of Como – Como Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Como in the Lombardy region of Italy and the seat of the Bishop of Como. It is a place dedicated to the Exaltation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The cathedral, located near Lake Como, is one of the most important buildings in the area. The building is usually described as the last Gothic cathedral built in Italy: construction on it, on the site of the earlier Romanesque cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore, began in 1396, 10 years after the foundation of Milan’s cathedral. The building work, begun under the direction of Lorenzo degli Spazzi di Laino, was not finished until 1770 with the completion of the Rococo dome by Filippo Juvarra. Porta Torre – The Porta Tower (also known as Torre di Porta Vittoria) is a major fortified tower located in the city of Como in Lombardy (Northern Italy). It is 40 meters high and was built in 1192 to defend the main entrance to the city. At the end of the war between Milan and Como in 1127, the Milanese, who won the conflict, built the ancient walls of the city, built during the Roman era. After the defeat, Como decided to ally himself with the German Emperor Frederick I (named Barbarossa) to fight the Milanese supremacy in Lombardy. In 1154 the emperor moved to Italy for the first time, and gave his consent to rebuild the defensive walls at Como (they are still visible around the city). Castello Baradello – Paradello Castle is a military fortress located on a 430-meter (1,410-foot) hill near the city of Como in northern Italy. The castle occupies the ancient site of Comum Oppidum, the original settlement of Como dating from the first millennium BC. Later, it was one of the last strongholds of the Byzantines in the region, and succumbed to the Lombards in 588. The castle was restored during the War of the Lombard League, with the help of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa (1158). Barbarossa formally donated the costs to the citizens of Como in 1178.
