In 1570, King Philip II, who was a great lover of horses, drew up a plan to establish a stable for purebred Spanish horses of Arab origin. He ordered the royal stables to be erected, and the main chamber itself, with its vaulted ceiling supported by sandstone columns, was divided into small separate areas, known as chests, within which the horses were kept.
