Capelinhos Volcano
The Capilinhos volcano is located on the Capelo Peninsula, which was formed by lava flows resulting from an eruption between 1957 and 1958. A lighthouse and several houses destroyed by the eruption highlight the drama of this truly unique landscape in the Azores. Sea swallows regularly make their nests in this volcano The lava flows in the wetter regions are now colonized by lichens and several species of coastal plants.
