The Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror ordered the construction of Cimenlik Castle at the narrowest point in the Dardanelles Strait in order to ensure the empire's control over commercial and military navigation in the strait. It also played a role in defending the city of Canakkale during World War I, which led to the destruction of a large part of it at the hands of French forces. And the British, to become today a military museum through which visitors can learn about the military history of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire.
