Forte Mare Castle is an integral part of the city of Herceg Novi throughout its long history, as it stands tall on a rocky cliff above the sea in the far south of the old town. It is said that the first stone of the castle was laid by King Tvrtko I in 1382, and the name of the castle comes Italian widely used since the time of Venetian rule during the seventeenth century, and nowadays, in addition to being one of the symbols of the city and a prominent attraction for tourists, the castle of Forte Mare is also the venue for the annual film festival and serves as an open museum during the summer.
