Gardens of Vatican City
The history of the Vatican Gardens dates back to the Middle Ages, when orchards and vineyards sprawled north of the papal palace. In 1279, Pope Nicholas III moved his residence to the Vatican from the Lateran Palace, closed this area with walls, and established an orchard and garden. These gardens are a natural, architectural and artistic space of great spiritual beauty. We can find here many fortifications, buildings and monuments dating back to the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
