Description of the place
The Gornergrat Railway is the most popular means of transportation in the Swiss town of Zermatt. The station connects the town of Zermatt, which is located at an altitude of 1,604 meters above sea level, with the summit of Gornergrat, which is located at an altitude of 3089 meters above sea level. The railway is the second highest railway in Europe, and the highest open air railway on the continent. It is an ancient railway, as it was opened in the year 1898.
