Gwanghwamun Square is divided into six sections, and in the center is a statue of King Sejong the Great; the fourth and greatest king of the Joseon dynasty and creator of the Hangeul system for the Korean alphabet, along with the statue of Admiral Yi Sunshin; A naval commander famous for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-1598), other attractions include the famous 12.23 Fountain, the Haechi Sculpture symbolizing Seoul, the flower carpet, and the "History Corridor" on both sides of the square.
