H.H. Petrus en Pauluskerk (De Papegaai)
Located on Amsterdam's shopping street Kalverstraat, this parochial church originally served the city's persecuted Catholic community. Because of the dominance of Calvinism, the original Catholic Church was built without aesthetic flares associated with the faith to hide its presence. This modest design succeeded in deceiving the authorities and allowed the parishioners to practice their religion in relative peace. Its entrance is marked by two life-size sculptures of St. Joseph and a large parrot perched on top of the platform.
