Built among the mountains and on the shores of the enchanting turquoise Lake Hallstatt, the old town of Hallstatt is a huge archaeological site of ancient salt mines, some of which are active to this day. This old town glows with Baroque motifs on colorful buildings, is full of upscale cafes and restaurants, and where you can go underground to see the salt lake and visit the prehistoric mummy of a miner frozen in salt.
