Description of the place
In Greek mythology, during the Trojan War, the region on Lake Iznik was controlled by the Phrygians who sent troops to help King Priam led by the brothers Phorcys and Ascanius. The lake was declared an Important Bird Area in 1989 for waterfowl species that have become threatened by pollution, and the lake has also been developed as a recreational centre.
