Lake Burley Griffin is the centerpiece of Canberra, and a large number of national institutions, national parks and national public spaces are located on or near its shores and are an integral part of the city's design and a vital component of the plan for the nation's capital. It is an artificial lake with a maximum depth of 17.6 metres, a length of about nine kilometers and a width ranging from 300 to 1,200 metres. Its blue turbid waters are home to birds, geese and ducks, and are ideal for canoeing and kayaking adventures.
