Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba
The mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba was built in 1960 in Monastir; The birthplace of Habib Bourguiba, who is considered the first president of the Republic of Tunisia, in the western part of the city's main cemetery. The building consists of a central area topped with a golden dome surrounded by two areas topped with green domes and double minarets with a height of 25 meters, and it can be reached through a walkway that is 200 meters long and wide. 30 meters at the end of which stands a large gate. Habib Bourguiba’s resting place can be found in the middle of a large circular room surrounded by corridors, with a huge crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling. The president’s remains lie in a marble sarcophagus built in 1976 and placed in the center of the room. It is also inside the mausoleum. Tombs of the president's close family members, which feature simple marble slabs set into the floor with inscriptions on the wall.
