The Monastery of the Forty Saints was built in the sixteenth century AD as an important site for Byzantine pilgrims, and it played an important role in the history of Saranda, as the city's first name was "Aji Saranda", meaning the Forty Saints; Its name came from the fact that it contained 40 rooms for Roman martyrs who refused to renounce their religious beliefs. Today, it is considered one of the historical attractions visited by many lovers of antiquities and buildings with distinctive architectural design.
