The site of Flexborg Castle was inhabited in antiquity, possibly as early as the Bronze Age, then reoccupied in the 13th century, and first mentioned in 1220; The castle was of great military importance because its forces controlled the junction between the plain and the Vecht Valley, and it served as the residence of Conrad Werner of Hallstatt, the imperial governor in the late 13th century.
