Piazza del Campo
Established at the intersection of the three small villages that would soon become the city of Siena, this stunning square is the symbol by which the city is known in the cosmopolitan milieu, and one of the reasons why UNESCO recognizes the city as the perfect embodiment of a medieval city. The square was originally built as a no-man's-land for the three villages where holidays and political ceremonies could be celebrated. The square extends over an area of 333 meters, and the design of the square was supposed to resemble the folds of the cloak of the Virgin Mary. Therefore it is zigzag. Today, the square has become a place where you can shop, eat delicious Italian dishes, and get to know the people of the city.
