Piazza del Duomo

Piazza del Duomo is the heart of San Gimignano, and was the center of political and religious life in the Middle Ages, marking the junction between the Via Francigena (which runs from north to south) and the ancient Via Pisa Siena (which runs from east to west). It is a square paved with red bricks in the shape of a trapezoid, lined with a group of ancient buildings, including the Roman Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Palazzo del Popolo, the Grosso Tower and many others. There is also a range of local shops, cafes and restaurants scattered around the square.
