During the seventeenth century, thousands of Jews immigrated to Amsterdam from Portugal in order to escape the constant religious conflicts plaguing the Iberian Peninsula. In Amsterdam they were allowed to practice their religion openly, and eventually built this impressively architecturally designed synagogue in the city's Jewish district that still stands today. The temple includes many pieces of art and decorations that express the Jewish religion and reflect their religious teachings.
