It is famous for the American Colony Hotel or the "American Colony"; An old luxury Ottoman mansion-turned-hotel, it features lush gardens and shops selling books and antiques. This neighborhood was established in 1956 under an agreement signed between the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) and the Jordanian government, and at that time it absorbed 28 Palestinian families who were displaced from their occupied lands in 1948, and is now threatened by an Israeli settlement plan that includes building 200 housing units in its center and evacuating its homes from families Palestine to house Jewish settlers.
