Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was built between 1794 and 1796, by order of King Jeonjo of the Joseon Dynasty, to house and honor the remains of his father, Prince Sado. Sado was executed by being imprisoned alive in a rice chest by his father, King Yeongjo, after failing to obey an order. by committing suicide. The fort and the closed palace were classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997, due to its striking beauty, as it is built in the historical Korean style and surrounded by magnificent Buddhist statues and temples. The fort contains between its walls more than 45 historical buildings.
