Temple of Segesta
Sagesta was one of the principal cities of the Elemis, one of the three indigenous peoples of Sicily. Other major cities of the Elymians were Eric and Entella. It is located in the northwestern part of Sicily in Italy, near the modern commune of Calatafimi-Segesta in the province of Trapani. The Hellenization of the region occurred very early on and had a profound impact on its people. On a hill outside the site of the ancient city of Segesta is an unusually well-preserved Doric temple. It is believed to have been built in 420 BC by an Athenian architect, although the city did not have a large Greek population. The temple has six out of fourteen pillars on a plinth measuring 21 by 56 metres.
