Tawaira is the Māori name for the huge rock that stretches out on the beach at Sumner, and refers to the many people who died from eating the flesh of a large whale stranded on the beach, and the rock is said to represent the corpse of that killer whale that had departed by black magic; If you are in Christchurch, you can go through it and see it up close.
