Vaucluse House
Vaucluse House is one of the few 19th-century Sydney mansions still surrounded by its original gardens and woodland. When the great colonial explorer, lawyer and politician William Charles Wentworth bought the house in 1827, it was a one-storey country house, after which the house was developed into a large estate, and the land was extended and flourished to cover most of the present-day suburb of Vaucluse. In 1915 the Vaucluse House became the first official house museum in Australia and continues to attract visitors to its lush and isolated grounds.
