Ajanta Caves
The Ajanta Caves are Buddhist cave temples and monasteries carved into the rock, located near the village of Ajanta in central Maharashtra state in western India. These temples were hollowed out from the granite cliffs on the inner side of the Wajurna River Valley. The first BC and the seventh century AD, and although the carvings and richly decorated columns are noteworthy, it is the wall paintings that distinguish these caves, as they depict Buddhist myths and deities colored with a vitality unparalleled in Indian art, and the caves have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
