The building was the site of the palace of one of the Islamic caliphs in the past, then it was converted into a Christian court later, then it became the seat of the Inquisition courts during the World War, and after that the civil prison and the last military prison were built in it. The place is surrounded by a wonderful garden where there are statues of the kings related to it, which was included as a historical monument in 1931 and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. The Alcazar occupies the site of the former caliph's palace.
