Ancien Port Fatimide
Ancien Port Fatimide
The ancient Fatimid port was built by the Fatimids more than 1,000 years ago on the remains of the Punic Basin. It is a rectangular port with an area of about 2.8 square kilometers and can accommodate up to 30 ships. This port was surrounded by a cover open to the sea and includes a door topped by an arch. Ships pass under it and it is closed by a chain that extends between two towers. This wonderful fishing port has preserved its traditional character. One can enjoy a cup of coffee or mint tea while watching the boats come in and out, as it is used by fishermen and traders to sell fresh fish, a major source of livelihood for the locals.
