Borj el Kastil

The Castel Tower was one of the Muslim fortifications on Djerba and was initially constructed by the Aragonese commander Roger de Lauria in 1284 on the Djerba Peninsula, to place a large garrison and establish the seat of government for the Christians of Sicily after the capture of Djerba in 1280 before being reconquered by Dargoth Pasha In 1551, he strengthened the defenses of the place by the outer walls to make it a developed defensive site and to monitor the entrance to the Qantara Strait.
