The Carlos Machado Museum was founded in 1876 by Carlos Maria Gomes Machado and located in the former Convent of Santo André, initially collecting collections of Azorean natural history (zoology, botany, geology and mineralogy), and later, The museum has expanded its collection to include today sacred art, regional ethnography, painting, court art, sculpture, gold and silver works, and ancient toys.
